Saskatchewan to develop plan around small modular nuclear reactors

(CP) REGINA – Saskatchewan is taking another step in its march to bring small modular nuclear technology to the province.
The Ministry of Environment announced it’s creating an office that will develop policy around this type of nuclear power.
The government says the mandate of the nuclear secretariat will be to come up with a plan for how to deploy small modular reactors.
It’s expected the office will be staffed by about five people, who will lay the groundwork for the technology for the government.
It comes after the premiers of Saskatchewan, Ontario and New Brunswick signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on the issue.
Saskatchewan Environment Minister Dustin Duncan says nuclear energy is clean and could help the province fight climate change as well as create jobs.
He says the province is still exploring what the possibilities and any movement is likely still years away.
Duncan says there’s an opportunity to incorporate it with Saskatchewan’s uranium industry, which is among the largest in the world.
