Predictive maintenance techniques are becoming more popular in the world of maintenance as the first step in reducing the amount of reactive maintenance a plant would perform. Most manufacturing plant operations perform about 80 per cent or more in the area of reactive work. They are finding and responding to maintenance tasks as the information is received from the operations team. Something is broken and its needs attention immediately. In many cases the operation is down until the repair is complete.
By using predictive tools and techniques, failures of specific components can be found before they cause downtime or collateral damage in other components. Failures and wear on components can be detected months before the first sign of failure can be detected with human senses, such as feeling, hearing, seeing, or smell. This gives us time to correct, plan, or take some action to minimize downtime. Using and reacting to predictive technology information can lower maintenance costs by 20% and increase operation time by another 20 per cent.
