ATCO partnership wins $1.43 billion competitive transmission project

Following a worldwide competitive process, Alberta PowerLine, a partnership between ATCO and Quanta Services, has been selected by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) to design, build, own, operate and finance the Fort McMurray West 500-kilovolt (kV) Transmission Project. Alberta PowerLine is 80 per cent owned by Canadian Utilities Limited, an ATCO company, and 20 per cent owned by Quanta Services. Valued at $1.43 billion, the project was awarded through Alberta’s recently instituted competitive process.

The Hydraulic Institute (HI) has announced the release of four updated publications: Rotodynamic Centrifugal Pumps for Nomenclature and Definitions (ANSI/HI 1.1-1.2-2014), Rotodynamic Vertical Pumps of Radial, Mixed, and Axial Flow Types for Nomenclature and Definitions (ANSI/HI 2.1-2.2-2014), Rotodynamic Centrifugal Pumps for Manuals Describing Installation, Operation, and Maintenance (ANSI/HI 1.4-2014) and Rotodynamic Vertical Pumps for Manuals Describing Installation, Operation, and maintenance (ANSI/HI 2.4-2014).  These updated Standards are immediately available for interested users from the Hydraulic Institute’s redesigned eStore.

SKF sensor bearing with EMC filter to protect against electric motor power surge damage

A newly introduced SKF sensor bearing equipped with an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) filter offers ideal protection against potential damage to the bearing’s sensitive electronics from power surges or electric discharges, most notably in AC electric motor applications.  The EMC filter is integrated in-line with the sensor bearing’s cable to protect the Hall sensor and other electronics used in the bearing and ultimately can help improve bearing reliability and service life.
