North York, ON – 30 years ago, on April 2, 1984, PTM Industries was incorporated. A vision of Don Knowles and Gary Cotton, PTM sought to fill a void in the Canadian industrial PT marketplace by offering international manufacturers a full-service representation firm, which would not only provide sales coverage but also warehousing, logistics, assembly and order desk functions.
PTM quickly grew to represent 20 lines spanning most industrial power transmission product categories, surpassed $10 million in sales and redefined the concept of a manufacturer’s rep in Canada.
Thirty years later, much has changed. The company is now headed by Gary’s son, Daniel Cotton. PTM now acts as an exclusive distributor, focused on partnering with and growing the market share and brand recognition of a select group of international suppliers.
From its humble beginnings in North York, it has expanded to become a national company with distribution centres in eastern and western Canada.
“PTM is where I got my start in this great industry back in 1989,” commented Desmond O’Keefe, area sales manager at Altra Industrial Motion. “It was an enjoyable eight years [for me]. Congrats and happy anniversary.”
“We are happy that we have been a small part of the past and look forward to growing with PTM in the future,” added Larry Horrie, distributor manager for Martin Engineering’s Cougar Vibration Solutions. “Congrats on your 30th anniversary!”
“I’m proud to be part of the PTM team,” said Dan. “And I’d like to thank all our customers, suppliers, employees and friends — both past and present — for being part of this success story. Another great 30 years is ahead of us!”
