DC drives from Sprint Electric regenerate energy

July 19, 2013 – With its recently extended PLX range, Sprint Electric says it offers regenerative 3-phase digital DC drive technology, which is able to regenerate energy back to the mains supply under braking without the need for intermediate storage, resistive dumping or additional power bridges. PLX DC drives are compact and easy to program, says Sprint, and available in current ratings between 12A and 2250A at supply voltages up to 690vac. A four quadrant DC drive uses two thyristor bridges to enable it to motor and brake in both directions of rotation. This allows it to reverse the torque to slow the load very gently or almost instantaneously, regenerating energy at the same time. It is suitable for winders and hoists, as well as mixers, extruders and rollers, and paper machines, wire drawing and machining. Sprint’s Canadian distribution partner is MDA Controls Inc.
