Washington, DC – The WasteWise initiative of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the first national, voluntary solid waste reduction program that helps companies to go ‘green’ with their manufacturing.
Bearing manufacturer NSK Inc. includes participation in WasteWise in its commitment to the environment. In 2012, the company’s waste reduction efforts resulted in equivalent savings of 30,689 trees or 379,134,000 sheets of newspaper. NSK also saved significant amounts on gas, water, oil and electricity. As a result, it encourages other organizations to adopt the WasteWise initiative.
The program starts with a planning process where employees and management work through six key steps:
1. Form a team
2. Conduct a waste assessment
3. Define the scope for your participation
4. Evaluate your options
5. Set goals
6. Implement planned activities.
Here are the initiatives NSK recommends related to bearings specifically.
Reconditioning reduces waste and costs
Reconditioning is an excellent opportunity both to reduce waste and lower maintenance costs, says the company. The process restores worn bearings to like-new specifications and performance through procedures that can include cleaning, polishing, grinding, replacement, resetting and refinishing. Although some bearings can be too damaged to recondition, many are excellent candidates for the process. NSK can help companies determine if reconditioning is appropriate for their specific bearing and application requirements.
High-performance products increase service life
NSK’s HPS or High Performance Series products also can help companies reduce waste though longer useful product life. The state-of-the-art material technology in these bearings delivers higher speed and load ratings that can increase service life and reduce replacement costs. The product series currently includes HPS spherical roller bearings and HPS angular contact ball bearings, and is to be expanded to include additional products lines.
