Toronto, ON — Robert (Bob) Ross Hilborn, the chief executive officer of Darcor Ltd., a manufacturer of casters and wheels based in Toronto, ON, passed away on March 19, 2012, at the age of 74, after a brief battle with cancer. His career at Darcor spanned more than 35 years.

The company that became Darcor, Darnell Corporation of Canada Ltd., was founded in 1932 in Toronto, to distribute Darnell products in Canada. In 1935, majority interest in the company was sold to Canadian interests.

Darnell was originally founded in 1921 as the “Perfect Caster Company” by principals J.L. Chestnut and Raleigh Darnell in Long Beach, CA. In 1929, the company changed its name to Darnell Corporation Limited.

In 1975 Raleigh Darnell died and his son, Bill Darnell, took over Darnell USA. A majority interest in Darnell Canada was then purchased from the Canadian interests by Bob Hilborn in 1976.

Bill Darnell died in 1977. Until their deaths, Raleigh and Bill Darnell had been directors of Darnell Canada since 1931. Later in 1977, Darnell USA was sold by the family to outside interests.

In 1981, Bob Hilborn bought the remaining interest of the Canadian operation from Darnell USA. It was mutually agreed that each party would not use the name Darnell in association with activities in the other parties’ home market. As a result, the name Darcor Casters was used in 1983 for the first time, when Darnell Canada’s US subsidiary, Darcor Inc., was incorporated in July 1983.

The Canadian entity continued as Darnell Canada Inc. until the name was changed in 1994 to Darcor Limited.

Bob Hilborn’s son, Rob E. Hilborn, who has been president of the company for more than a decade, says he plans to continue to lead the business in the traditions established by his father.
