Halifax, NS — The province of Nova Scotia plans to penalize employers and employees who break occupational health and safety laws starting in January 2010.

 

Under the new program, the provincial Department of Labour and Workforce Development will be able to issue fines for workplace violations of health and safety laws. Such fines are currently levied by the province’s courts.

Nova Scotia saw a total of 29 workplace fatalities in 2008. In addition, it had 8,000 incidents where employees were not able to come to work the following day.
