Mississauga, ON — The next session of NTN Canada’s Roller Bearing and Maintenance Training Program will be held in Mississauga, Ont., Nov. 19-22, 2007. This intensive three-and-a-half day course covers the design, application and maintenance of anti-friction bearings.

The course is presented using lectures and hands-on workshops selected to highlight common maintenance problems that result in premature bearing failure. The program is ideally suited for plant production, maintenance and operations personnel whose duties include the installation and maintenance of anti-friction bearings. It is structured so that it is not specific to any industry.

In conjunction with classroom lectures, the participants will learn, in a hands-on environment, the correct procedures for mounting the following types of bearings:

– large bore spherical roller bearings (including the use of hydraulics)
– tapered roller bearings (mounting and setting end play)
– deep groove ball bearings
– cylindrical roller bearings
– bearing units
– small bore spherical roller bearing pillow blocks.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of current bearing technology, including bearing design and materials, cage configurations and materials — features and benefits, extra precision — what is required, and bearing life — theory vs. reality.

In addition, NTN’s new mobile training unit (MTU) allows consultation with NTN engineering and NTN field service specialists at plant and manufacturing facilities around the country.

MTU is designed to familiarize participants with bearing fundamentals and provides the necessary equipment to mobilize NTN Distributor and NTN TEAM (Technical Engineering and Maintenance) programs, which in the past have been available only at the head office training facility in Mississauaga, Ont.

The NTN Mobile Training Unit is equipped to perform bearing training sessions at a customer’s site. It contains demonstration equipment, along with all the necessary samples to illustrate bearing types and best installation practices.

Groups of 10 to 15 people typical for NTN’s bearing training. Mobile training ourses are conducted at customer facilities or can also be arranged at other locations as needed.

Designed specifically to meet the needs of individuals involved in bearings, presentations focus on bearing products and/or maintenance issues. Delivered in a modular format, modules begin with a lecture on the related topic. The lecture is followed by a demonstration that reinforces the covered material. For convenience, training can be conducted on NTN’s prearranged demonstration equipment. Alternatively, the session can be customized by using the end-user’s equipment and reviewing the crew’s everyday installation challenges with the NTN trainer.

Depending on the nature of the module, questions and discussion, each mobile training session can last between one and three hours. Individual modules can be delivered to a variety of different groups for convenience, or multi-module full-day sessions can be planned for single groups. Current modules offered include:

Bearing Basics
Stores – Storage and Handling
Ball and Roller Bearing types
Bearing Units
Heavy Duty Blocks – Split pillow blocks and SPW
Electric motor assembly and related issues
Shaft and housing fitting practice
Radial internal clearance and measurement
Installation of cylindrical bore bearings
Installation of tapered bore spherical roller bearings
Failure analysis.
