Toronto, ON — Wendy B. McDonald, chairman of BC Bearing Engineers Ltd. of Burnaby, B.C., will be recognized at a gala in Toronto tonight (Nov. 22) with a Canadian Women Entrepreneur Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Ms. McDonald, well-known in the power transmission industry in Canada and internationally, is being recognized once again for her contribution to business in Canada. This will be just one of several awards and honours she has been presented over the years.

The 2005 RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur Awards (CWEA) is sponsored for the first time by RBC Financial Group. “RBC is delighted to be part of this exciting and always inspiring event that will honour truly outstanding women and role models from right across Canada,” says Kristina Depencier, national manager, small business & women’s market, RBC Financial Group.

The 14-year-old awards event provides national recognition to Canada’s women entrepreneurs, whose successful businesses play a pivotal role in the growth of local, national and global communities. Awards presented include Start-Up, Innovation, Impact on Local Economy, Export and Lifetime Achievement. (This year, two new Awards will be presented: a Momentum Award to recognize women who have passed start-up mode and are now running long-term, viable businesses; and a Trailblazer Award to honour a true trendsetter.) Initially, most of the businesses nominated were small, but today their revenues range from $250,000 to over $500 million.

“We are overwhelmed by the success of this year’s program,” says Pat Pape, president of the Powerpoint Group Inc., which produces the awards. “The number of nominations and applications has grown tremendously and there is much greater representation from right across Canada than ever before. This year’s awards will truly raise the bar of excellence.”

The BC Bearing Group of companies is a family endeavour, with four of Wendy McDonald’s children and two grandchildren involved in its operation. She ensures the company maintains a strong commitment to the roots and values that have led to its half-century of success.

The BC Bearing Group was founded in 1944. A distributor of industrial products and value-added services, it has 62 locations worldwide and sales in excess of C$200 million.

The company represents more than 100 manufacturers and distributes bearings, power transmission, material handling components, variable frequency drives and systems, mechanical packing and gaskets, and other allied industrial products.

The Canadian operation, BC Bearing Engineers Limited, has more than two dozen locations in Western Canada, while US Bearings and Drives has over 20 locations in the Western United States. International operations include BC Bearing Chile S.A., BC Bearing de Mxico S.A. de C.V., and BC Bearing Peru SRL.

The company is ISO 9001:2000 certified at all of its North American locations.

BC Bearing has received the distinction of being named twice, most recently in 1995, in the “Top 50 Privately-Owned Companies in Canada” in a nationwide process by Arthur Andersen and The Financial Post and twice, most recently in 1998, as “Power Transmission Distributor of the Year,” by Machinery & Equipment MRO magazine.
