Chicago, IL — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its December 2004 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products increased 9.8% as compared to sales for January through December 2003. Sales decreased 9.8% over the previous month and rose 11.2% as compared to December 2003.

Days sales in accounts receivables increased 12.3% over November 2004 and decreased 0.2% as compared to the same month last year. Annualized sales to inventory ratio in December was 7.2, compared to 7.1 in 2003.

For December, the confidence level of Canadian distributors fell to 5.8 on a 10- point scale.

In December, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products increased 11.5% as compared to sales for January through December 2003. Sales decreased 1.2% over the previous month and grew 11.6% as compared to December 2003.

Days sales in accounts receivables increased 0.3% over November 2004 and remained flat as compared to the same month last year. Annualized sales to inventory ratio in December was 7.9, compared to 7.0 in 2003.

For December, the confidence level of U.S. distributors remained flat at 6.7 on a 10-point scale.

Canadian manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products increased 5.3% as compared to sales for January through December in 2003. Sales decreased 11.6% over the previous month and rose 5.2% as compared to December 2003. As compared to November, sales of mounted bearings and variable speed drives increased. Sales of unmounted bearings, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings decreased.

For December, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers fell to 5.5 on a 10- point scale.

In December, U.S. manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products were up 11.0% as compared to sales for January through December 2003. Sales increased 1.1% over the previous month and climbed 16.4% as compared to December 2003. As compared to November, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of variable speed drives and positioning systems/linear motion products decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers increased 14.0% as compared to 2003. December orders decreased 7.8% over November and climbed 17.0% as compared to December 2003. Annualized sales to inventory ratio in December was 11.9, compared to 10.1 in 2003.

For December, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers fell to 5.7 on a 10-point scale.
