Huntsville, ON — Clamp and coupling manufacturer Oetiker Ltd. of Alliston, Ont., received first place honours at a recent Northern Quality Circle competition held by Honda of America in Huntsville, Ont.
The competition, which is held every year, consists of eight teams competing against each other over the course of two days. Twenty-five companies from Canada, the United States and Mexico competed.
Quality circles are teams working with the co-operation of management, seeking solutions to improve productivity and work related problems.
In April 2004, Oetiker held an internal Quality Circle competition at its Alliston facility, where six teams of employees competed against each other. From there, the winning team qualified to attend the Huntsville, Ont., competition.
The winning presentation is titled “Excessive Work in Process at Hand-Roll area.” In total, this project will save Oetiker $16,391 per year.
The benefits of the continuous improvement program are: enhancement of individual problem solving, communication, presentation and team-building skills. This program provides the opportunity for teams to improve processes, making positive changes to the work environment.
By placing first in the Huntsville competition, the company has secured a spot to participate at the Honda World Convention taking place Nov. 1-5, 2004, in California. Two other supplier teams and 80 teams from various Honda companies will also make presentations at this event.
Oetiker, which was founded in Switzerland, has been manufacturing clamps and couplings for more than 50 years. The Canadian manufacturing and sales operation was established in 1963.
