Joliette, QC — Bridgestone Firestone’s only production plant in Canada, located in Joliette, Que., has reached an impressive milestone by producing its 100 millionth tire — nearly 40 years after turning out its first.
“I would like to personally congratulate and commend each and every one of our employees, because without their hard work and dedication over the years we would not have been able to achieve this impressive production milestone,” said recently appointed plant general manager, Isaac Motohashi. “There is undoubtedly the same level of pride and enthusiasm among our employees for this 100-millionth tire as there was for the first one produced at this plant, on December 30, 1965,” he added.
In celebration of the achievement, the Joliette plant has set up a permanent exhibition on its premises dedicated to the plant’s milestones. Also, Minardi team Formula One drivers, Zolt Baumgartner and Gianmaria Bruni, made a visit to the plant on June 14, 2004, following the Canadian Grand Prix, to salute and congratulate the employees.
Production at the Bridgestone Joliette plant has more than quadrupled since the factory opened. In 1965, the plant produced 3,500 tires a day, with 360 employees. Today, with 1,250 employees, it turns out 16,500 tires a day for passenger vehicles, light trucks and sport-utility vehicles.
The types of tires the plant produces daily has increased to 45, from 19, in the last three years to meet the needs of vehicle manufacturers and consumers. Bridgestone has injected $467 million into the plant since its acquisition of Firestone in 1989 to respond to these ever-changing needs.
