Chicago, IL — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its December 2003 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

In December, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products increased 0.4% as compared to sales for January through December 2002. Sales rose 4.9% over the previous month and grew 6.4% as compared to December 2002. For December, the confidence level of U.S. distributors rose to 5.5 on a 10-point scale.

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products gained 1.8% as compared to sales for January through December 2002. Sales dropped 2.9% over the previous month but climbed 12.1% as compared to December 2002. For December, the confidence level of Canadian distributors remained flat at 5.8 on a 10-point scale.

In December, U.S. manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products decreased 10.1% as compared to sales for January through December 2002. Sales shrunk 0.8% over the previous month and declined 6.4% as compared to December 2002. As compared to November, sales of mounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products, and mechanical drive systems and other PT products increased. Sales of unmounted bearings, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings decreased. For December, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers fell to 5.3 on a 10-point scale.

Canadian manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products increased 0.8% as compared to sales for January through December in 2002. Sales dropped 5.9% over the previous month and shrunk 4.2% as compared to December 2002. As compared to November, sales of variable speed drives and shaft couplings increased. Sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and clutches and brakes decreased. For December, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers fell to 5.3 on a 10-point scale.
