Chicago, IL — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its September 2003 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

<b>Distributors’ results</b>

In September, <b>Canadian distributors'</b> year-to-date sales of PT/MC products gained 0.9% as compared to sales for January through September in 2002. Sales climbed 15.2% over the previous month and rose 3.5% as compared to September 2002.

For September, the confidence level of Canadian distributors fell from 5.8 to 5.5.

<b>U.S. distributors'</b> year-to-date sales of PT/MC products remained flat as compared to sales for January through September in 2002. Sales increased 6.0% over the previous month and were up 1.4% as compared to September 2002.

For September, the confidence level of U.S. distributors held constant at 4.9.

<b>Manufacturers’ results</b>

<b>Canadian manufacturers'</b> year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were up 2.1% as compared to sales for January through September in 2002. Sales climbed 15.6% over the previous month and grew 5.9% as compared to September 2002.

As compared to August 2003, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of variable speed drives and shaft couplings decreased.

For September, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers rose to 5.4 from 5.3.

In September, <b>U.S. manufacturers'</b> year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were down 10.9% as compared to sales for January through September in 2002. Sales increased 10.3% over the previous month but were down 6.4% as compared to September 2002.

As compared to August 2003, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products, mechanical drives systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of gear products decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers decreased 11.1% as compared to 2002. September orders gained 6.3% over August but declined 2.8% as compared to September 2002.

For September, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers held steady at 5.3.
