Chicago, Ill. – The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its August 2003 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were up 1.2% as compared to sales for January through August in 2002. Sales fell 10.9% over the previous month and shrunk 14.6% as compared to August 2002. For August, the confidence level of Canadian distributors continued to increase, rising to 5.8 on a 10-point scale from 5.7 in July. It was 5.3 in June and 5.0 in May.

In August, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 0.2% as compared to sales for January through August in 2002. Sales were down 1.6% over the previous month and declined 5.7% as compared to August 2002. For August, the confidence level of U.S. distributors remained flat at 4.9.

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products gained 1.7% as compared to sales for January through August in 2002. Sales rose 0.8% over the previous month but were down 4.8% as compared to August 2002.

As compared to July, sales of unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, gear products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of mounted bearings, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and shaft couplings decreased. For August, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers fell to 5.2 from 5.3 in July.

In August, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products dropped 11.6% as compared to sales for January through August in 2002. Sales were up 6.1% over the previous month but declined 14.6% as compared to August 2002.

As compared to July, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, and shaft couplings decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers fell 12.3% as compared to 2002. August orders increased 5.6% over July but decreased 13.5% as compared to August 2002. For August, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers held steady at 5.3.
