PT market soars in Canada, sours in U.S., in Jan.-April results

Chicago, Ill. — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) released the April trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products on June 3, 2003.

In April, Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were up 17.0% as compared to sales for January through April in 2002. Sales increased 0.5% over the previous month and climbed 15.5% as compared to April 2002. The confidence level of Canadian distributors remained flat at 5.3 on a 10-point scale.

In April, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products rose 2.0% as compared to sales for January through April in 2002. Sales increased 1.7% over the previous month and grew 0.6% as compared to April 2002. For April, the confidence level of U.S. distributors rose to 5.0 on a 10-point scale.

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products increased 4.0% as compared to sales for January through April in 2002. Sales decreased 7.2% over the previous month and fell 1.9% as compared to April 2002. As compared to March, sales of gear products grew. Sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings were down. The confidence level of Canadian manufacturers dropped to 5.0 on a 10-point scale.

In April, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 9.8% as compared to sales for January through April in 2002. Sales were down 10.6% over the previous month and declined 12.9% as compared to April 2002. As compared to March, sales of standard industrial motors and shaft couplings were up. Sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and clutches and brakes dropped.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers shrunk 10.5% as compared to 2002. April orders decreased 7.3% over March and decreased 17.6% as compared to April 2002. The confidence level of U.S. manufacturers fell to 5.2 on a 10-point scale.
