Chicago, Ill. — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released the March 2003 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Distributors

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products grew 17.5% as compared to sales for January through March in 2002. Sales climbed 2.7% over the previous month and increased 26.9% as compared to March 2002. For March, the confidence level of Canadian distributors dropped to 5.3 on a 10-point scale.

In March, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products increased 3.4% as compared to sales for January through March in 2002. Sales decreased 3.0% over the previous month but rose 3.6% as compared to March 2002. For March, the confidence level of U.S. distributors fell to 4.4 on a 10-point scale.

Manufacturers

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products gained 6.1% as compared to sales for January through March in 2002. Sales were up 6.3% over the previous month and climbed 15.3% as compared to March 2002. As compared to February, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of gear products and clutches and brakes decreased. For March, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers increased to 5.2 on a 10-point scale.

In March, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products declined 8.5% as compared to sales for January through March in 2002. Sales rose 5.6% over the previous month and grew 3.6% as compared to March 2002. As compared to February, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of standard industrial motors and positioning systems/linear motion products decreased. For March, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers rose to 5.4 on a 10-point scale.
