Chicago, IL — Feb. 24, 2003 — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its December 2002 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Distributor’s results

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were up 0.4% as compared to sales for January through December in 2001. Sales fell 12.6% over the previous month and grew 17.6% as compared to December 2001.

For December, the confidence level of Canadian distributors rose to 5.7 on a 10-point scale, from 5.2 in the previous month.

In December, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were down 0.6% as compared to sales for January through December in 2001. Sales decreased 3.9% over the previous month but rose 10.4% as compared to December 2001.

The confidence level of U.S. distributors fell to 5.0 for the month, from 5.1 in the previous month.

Manufacturer’s results

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products gained 3.7% as compared to sales for January through December in 2001. Sales declined 3.1% over the previous month and increased 24.2% as compared to December 2001. As compared to November, sales of mounted bearings and mechanical drive systems and other PT products were up. Sales unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, gear products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings decreased.

For December, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers rose to 5.2, from 4.7 in the previous month.

In December, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products shrunk 2.5% as compared to sales for January through December in 2001. Sales were down 5.3% over the previous month but were up 0.3% as compared to December 2001. As compared to November, sales of mounted bearings and gear products increased. Sales of unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings dropped.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers decreased 2.2% as compared to 2001. December orders fell 4.9% over November and dropped 7.1% as compared to December 2001.

For December, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers grew to 5.2, from 5.0 in the previous month.
