PTDA reports drop in confidence level of manufacturers and distributors in October despite rise in sales over September

Chicago, IL — Dec. 13, 2002. — October 2002 sales trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products shows growth over September in Canada and the U.S., the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) reports.

Distributor results

The PTDA monthly report showed that Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were down 1.6% as compared to sales for January through October in 2001. Sales went up 0.1% over the previous month and gained 1.9% as compared to October 2001.

For October, the confidence level of Canadian distributors fell to 5.0 on a 10-point scale, from 5.5 in September.

In October, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 1.7% as compared to sales for January through October in 2001. Sales rose 3.9% over the previous month and increased 3.7% as compared to October 2001.

For October, the confidence level of U.S. distributors dropped to 4.7 on a 10-point scale from 5.0 the previous month.

Manufacturer results

In October, Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products gained 1.6% as compared to sales for January through October in 2001. Sales climbed 0.9% over the previous month and went up 5.2% as compared to October 2001. As compared to September, sales of unmounted bearings, gear products, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of mounted bearings, variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and clutches and brakes decreased.

For October, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers fell to 5.0 from 5.2 the previous month on a 10-point scale.

In October, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products went down 2.9% as compared to sales for January through October in 2001. Sales grew 0.2% over the previous month and increased 3.2% as compared to October 2001. As compared to September, sales of unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, gear products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of mounted bearings, variable speed drives, positioning systems/ linear motion products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and shaft couplings decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers declined 1.5% as compared to 2001. October orders were up 3.6% over September and rose 1.1% as compared to October 2001. .

For October, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers dropped to 5.0, down from 5.2 in September, on a 10-point scale.
