Chicago, IL — Nov. 11, 2002 — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its September trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products show a decrease of 2.0% as compared to sales for January through September 2001. Sales increased 6.7% over the previous month and 8.7% over September 2001.

For September, the confidence level of Canadian distributors rose to 5.5 from last month’s 5.3 on a 10-point scale.

U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were a negative 2.3% this year as compared to sales for January through September of 2001. Sales declined 1.5% over the previous month but increased 5.2% over those of September 2001.

For September, the confidence level of U.S. distributors rose slightly to 5.0 from August’s 4.9 on a 10-point scale.

<b>Manufacturers</b>

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products increased 1.2% as compared to sales for January through September of 2001. Sales increased 5.3% over the previous month and increased 14.8% as compared to September 2001.

As compared to August, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, mechanical drive systems and other power transmission products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of variable speed drives, gear products and shaft couplings decreased.

For September, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers held steady at 5.2 on a 10-point scale.

U.S. manufacturers’ overall year-to-date sales of PT/MC products resulted in a -3.6% as compared to sales for January through September of 2001. Sales declined 1.1% over the previous month but grew 1.8% as compared to September 2001.

As compared to August, sales of mounted bearings, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other power transmission products and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives and shaft couplings decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers declined 1.4% as compared to January through September of 2001. September orders decreased 9.4% over August but rose 2.5% as compared to September 2001.

For September, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers fell slightly to 5.2 from August’s 5.3 on a 10-point scale.
