Montreal, QC — Oct. 17, 2002 — Ray Desabrais, president of the union at Noranda Inc.’s Horne copper smelter in Quebec, plans to meet with management on Oct. 17 to try to find an agreement that will end a four-month strike by more than 500 maintenance and production workers.

Le Syndicat des Travailleurs de la Mine Noranda began the strike June 18. The union’s contract with Toronto-based Noranda had expired in Feburary.

Key issues of contention in the strike are seniority, the use of subcontractors and health benefits.
