Chicago, Ill. — Aug. 14, 2002 — Sales dipped in June according to the latest trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products has been compiled by the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA).

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products declined 3.8% as compared to sales for January through June in 2001. Sales dropped 3.1% over the previous month and decreased 2.3% as compared to June 2001.

For June, the confidence level of Canadian distributors fell to 6.0 on a 10-point scale.

In June, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 4.6% as compared to sales for January through June in 2001. Sales fell 2.8% over the previous month and decreased 3.9% as compared to June 2001.

For June, the confidence level of U.S. distributors rose to 5.1 on a 10-point scale.

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products fell 0.9% as compared to sales for January through June in 2001. Sales decreased 4.9% over the previous month and decreased 6.7% as compared to June 2001.

As compared to May, sales of variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and shaft couplings were up. Sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, gear products, and clutches and brakes were down.

For June, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers fell to 5.0 on a 10-point scale.

In June, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were down 6.4% as compared to sales for January through June in 2001. Sales increased 2.9% over the previous month and grew 0.4% as compared to June 2001.

As compared to May, sales of mounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of unmounted bearings, positioning systems/linear motion products, and clutches and brakes decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers decreased 2.9% as compared to 2001. June orders gained 2.7% over May and rose 2.1% as compared to June 2001.

For June, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers rose to 5.0 on a 10-point scale.
