Toronto — July 15, 2002 — A planned summer maintenance shutdown is underway at the Manitoba mine and mill operations of nickel producer Inco Ltd. At the same time, negotiations are underway with the workers’ union, as the current labour contract will expire in mid-September. The company hopes an agreement can be reached by that time.
Inco’s Thompson, Man., facility produces around 100 million lb of finished nickel a year. The shutdown, which covers all operations except the Birchtree mine, began early in July. Full production will gradually return over the next few weeks.
