Chicago, Ill. — June 17, 2002 — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released the April 2002 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Distributor report

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products fell 4.7% as compared to sales for January through April in 2001. Sales climbed 10.4% over the previous month and increased 8.8% as compared to April 2001.

For April, the confidence level of Canadian distributors remained flat at 5.3 on a 10-point scale.

In April, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 5.3% as compared to sales for January through April in 2001. Sales increased 4.8% over the previous month and grew 2.0% as compared to April 2001.

For April, the confidence level of U.S. distributors rose to 4.9 on a 10-point scale.

Manufacturer report

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products declined 0.9% as compared to sales for January through April in 2001. Sales gained 9.2% over the previous month and increased 9.4% as compared to April 2001. As compared to March, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, gear products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of mechanical drive systems and other PT products decreased.

For April, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers fell to 5.1 on a 10-point scale.

In April, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products declined 8.9% as compared to sales for January through April in 2001. Sales decreased 0.5% over the previous month but were up 2.8% as compared to April 2001. As compared to March, sales of unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of mounted bearings, mechanical drives and other PT products and shaft couplings decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers decreased 5.5% as compared to 2001. April orders increased 8.1% over March but fell 7.7% as compared to April 2001.

For April, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers fell to 5.1 on a 10-point scale.
