Chicago, Ill. — May 16, 2002 — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its March trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

<b>Distributor’s sales</b>

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products declined 8.8% as compared to sales for January through March 2001. Sales dropped 7.7% over the previous month and plunged 13.2% as compared to March 2001. For March, the confidence level of Canadian distributors remained flat at 5.3 on a 10-point scale.

In March, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 7.6% as compared to sales for January through March 2001. Sales fell 4.7% over the previous month and dropped 7.7% as compared to March 2001. For March, the confidence level of U.S. distributors fell to 4.8 on a 10-point scale.

<b>Manufacturer’s sales</b>

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 5.7% as compared to sales for January through March 2001. March 2002 sales fell 6.8% over the previous month and decreased 8.1% as compared to March 2001. As compared to February 2002, sales of clutches and brakes increased. Sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and shaft couplings decreased.

For March, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers was 5.3 on a 10-point scale.

In March, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 14.2% as compared to sales for January through March in 2001. Sales shrunk 1.1% over the previous month and fell 13.9% as compared to March 2001. As compared to February 2002, sales of standard industrial motors, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products and shaft couplings decreased.

For March, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers was 5.2 on a 10-point scale.
