Chicago, IL — May 1, 2002 — The February 2002 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products has been released by the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA).

Distributor’s results

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 6.4% compared to sales for January through February in 2001. February sales increased 8.2% over the previous month but slipped 5.8% compared to February 2001.

For February, the confidence level of Canadian distributors fell to 5.3 on a 10-point scale.

In February, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products fell 7.5% as compared to the 2001 period. Sales for the month increased 7.3% over January but declined 6.1% compared to a year ago.

For February, the confidence level of U.S. distributors rose to 5.1 on a 10-point scale.

Manufacturer’s results

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 4.6% compared to sales for January through February in 2001. Sales increased 8.6% over the previous month and increased 0.4% compared to February 2001.

Compared to January, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems and other power transmission products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of gear products decreased.

For February, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers rose to 5.1 on a 10-point scale.

In February, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products dropped 14.3% compared to 2001. Sales increased 4.6% over the previous month but fell 13.0% compared to February 2001.

Compared to January, sales of mounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other power transmission products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of unmounted bearings and, positioning systems/linear motion products decreased.

For February, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers rose to 5.3 on a 10-point scale.
