Chicago, Ill. — Feb. 12, 2002 — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its December 2001 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Distributors

Canadian distributors’ sales of PT/MC products dropped 20.9% in December 2001 over the previous month and plunged 28.7% as compared to December 2000. For December, the confidence level of Canadian distributors rose to 5.0 on a 10-point scale.

U.S. distributors’ sales of PT/MC products decreased 11.5% over the previous month and declined 17.0% as compared to December 2000. For December, the confidence level of U.S. distributors rose to 4.0 on a 10-point scale.

Manufacturers

Canadian manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products decreased 15.1% in December 2001 over the previous month and declined 10.8% as compared to December 2000.

As compared to November, sales of clutches and brakes rose. Sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and shaft couplings decreased.

For December, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers climbed to 4.9 on a 10-point scale.

Overall, U.S. manufacturers’ December sales of PT/MC products decreased 6.6% over the previous month and dropped 13.6% as compared to December 2000.

As compared to November, sales of mounted bearings, variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products and shaft couplings decreased.

For December, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers rose to 4.9 on a 10-point scale.
