Hamilton, ON — Dec. 8, 2001 — Jeffery David Turner, 57, was killed yesterday at Stelco’s Hilton Works plant in Hamilton while trying to remove loose bars from a bundling machine in the No. 1 Bar Mill.
The father of four had been with Stelco for 34 years, and had several years experience working with the machine. A co-worker found Turner shortly after he had begun his shift. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident is being investigated by the provincial Ministry of Labour, Hamilton police and the company’s joint occupational health and safety committee.
Operation of the machine was halted until it is certified as safe. A Stelco spokesman said the machine appeared to be operating normally at the time of the incident.
