Toronto, ON — Nov. 29, 2001 — Canadian Manufacturers & exporters (CME) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Hubei Provincial Department of Foreign Trade & Economic Cooperation in China. The signing took place during a visit on Nov. 21 to Toronto of a senior delegation of Chinese business and government representatives.
Hubei Province is the economic engine of Central China with major industries in hydroelectric power generation, metallurgy, machinery, chemicals, automobiles and textiles. Hubei is also known for its strong research sector, particularly in laser, fibre optic communications, bioengineering and new materials.
This agreement will seek to establish closer contacts between CME members and companies in Hubei province. With China’s continued opening of the economy and entry into the World Trade Organization Canadian firms will have increased confidence in investing and working with Chinese firms.
Doreen Ruso, CME vice-president, International Trade Development, said the “demands of China’s growing middle class and the requirements for upgrading of infrastructure and technology will provide Canadian firms with opportunities to export and also to establish longer term business relationships with Chinese firms.”
