Montreal, QC — Oct. 2, 2001 — Bombardier Transportation, a division of Montreal’s Bombardier Inc., recently opened a new, state-of-the-art maintenance facility. Known as Central Rivers, it is located in Staffordshire, UK.
Central Rivers has been purpose-built to maintain the new 34 Voyager and 44 Super Voyager trains being manufactured for Virgin Trains. The C$69-million facility, built on a 29-acre greenfield site at Barton-under Needwood, has already created 120 new jobs and, when the full fleet of 78 trains is in service in 2003, will eventually employ 250 staff.
The facility has additional capacity to enable Bombardier Transportation to offer maintenance services to other train operators in the future.
Bombardier Transportation has a major presence in the UK, employing some 5,200 people across the country. As well as manufacturing capability at the Derby and Wakefield sites, the company has maintenance centres at Central Rivers, Crewe, Doncaster, Chart Leacon, Ilford, Croydon and 13 other locations throughout the UK.
