OSHA's Top 10 safety violations in 2013

Washington, DC − The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA) released the latest statistics from 2013 about the top ten safety violations occurring within the year. The data is derived from the most frequently cited safety standards following worksite inspections.

The numbers are for the United States, but Canadian companies will find that the types of incidents are familiar. These common safety violations can be mitigated by taking the appropriate steps toward a safe and compliant machinery environment. Many workplace injuries are preventable when safety standards are met.

Top 10 cited safety standards for 2013

- Fall Protection (1926.501): 8,241 violations

- Hazard Communication (1910.1200): 6,156 violations

- Scaffolding (1926.451): 5,423 violations

- Respiratory Protection (1910.134): 3,879 violations

- Electrical, Wiring Methods (1910.305): 3,452 violations

- Powered Industrial Trucks (1910.178): 3,340 violations

- Ladders (1926.1053): 3,311 violations

- Lockout/Tagout (1910.147): 3,254 violations

- Electrical, General Requirements (1910.303): 2,745 violations

- Machine Guarding (1910.212): 2,701 violations.
