Mississauga, ON – KSB Pumps Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of global pump manufacturer KSB Group, is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Canada this year. To mark this milestone, the Mississauga-based pump specialist joined the local ‘One Million Trees Mississauga’ initiative (www.onemilliontrees.ca) by planting 150 trees in Canada’s sixth-largest municipality.

“Our staff has pitched in to contribute to a greener future for our Canadian home,” says KSB Canada’s CEO and president, Mike Blundell. “By planting six trees for every year since our company was established in Canada (in June 1989), we are giving something back to our community – and also emphasizing KSB’s role as a global leader in energy conservation through pump efficiency.”

Trees make a major contribution to a healthy environment. They absorb carbon dioxide and other gases such as sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide from the air, and release oxygen. One large tree can provide a day’s supply of oxygen for four people while capturing up to 13 lb. of carbon each year. “Our 150 trees are only a symbolic gesture”, says Blundell, “but we want to help Mississauga reach its goal of adding one million trees to its tree canopy by 2032.

“At the same time, we hope to draw attention to our larger efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of pumping systems,” added Blundell. “With pumps consuming approximately 20% of the energy used in the industrial sector, we can see great benefits in helping the designers and managers of industrial or municipal facilities enhance the energy efficiency of the equipment they operate.”

A major milestone in KSB’s ambitious green program was the 2012 launch of a global energy optimization initiative, termed Fluid Future. This initiative addresses both environmental and economic aspects of pump system performance, from the design of individual components to the optimization of total pumping systems.

KSB Canada’s most recent achievement in this field is the introduction of two innovative products: The PumpDrive series of variable frequency drives (which help to adjust operating speed of pumps to precisely meet system requirements) and new ultra-high-efficiency SuPremE motors. Used together, these products can deliver energy savings of up to 60% when compared to pumps with conventional fixed-speed electric motors.

The SuPremE motors are built without permanent magnets. This provides a further environmental benefit, since the extraction of rare earth materials for use in high-performance permanent magnets often can have severe environmental impacts in their countries of origin.
