“Made in Canada” has proven to be a distinct advantage for Orangeville, Ont.,-based Technicor Inc., a manufacturer of precision thermoplastic chain guides and engineered plastics. This advantage has shown in two key areas: proximity to Canadian customers and just-in-time Canadian-made raw materials.

Technicor started business in 1987, supplying engineered plastics to the bearing and motion control industries in Canada. Its first product, Snap-Idle chain tensioners, led to an expanded and varied product line. Using UHMW-PE sheet and rod, produced in Orangeville by the only Canadian manufacturer of these raw materials, “Canadian-made” proved to be a distinct advantage by combining precision machining and the raw material source in close proximity to each other.

Furthermore, market data has shown that very few companies manufacture specialized chain guide products in Canada. Most large Canadian users and OEM builders import from Germany or the U.S.A. “Canadian-made” has proven to be advantageous to them, particularly in terms of lead times, transportation and delivery.

Technicor, which is ISO-9001-2000 registered, now offers full-service precision-machined products, both as standard products and custom-made components from engineered plastics. Recent advances in cutting tool design have resulted in superior surface finishes and precision.

Chain guides, T-slot tracks and curves for side-flexing tabletop chain are but a few of the specialized conveyor components made on CNC equipment. Standard chain track lengths are 10 ft. Common materials are UHMW-PE, Nylatron, and special low-friction blends such as Ramex-SL, a silicon-additive blend of UHMW-PE.

The range of products includes sheet, rod and tube stock, plastic bearing housings and inserts, plastic and SS316 ball bearings, plastic conveyor end bearings and bushings, washdown grade conveyor rollers, plastic conveyor wheels, skate wheels, custom-engineered plastic ball bearing assemblies, and conveyor attachments, paddles and flights. Standard products are catalogued on the company’s website and custom products are usually manufactured to customer specifications from CAD files.

Technicor plans to double its plant space in the fall of 2004, making room for additional equipment and expanding its product size to 12-ft long and 5-ft wide components.
