Chicago, Ill. — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its July trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

In July, <b>Canadian distributors’ </b>year-to-date sales of PT/MC products gained 1.3% as compared to sales for January through July in 2002. Sales decreased 1.9% over the previous month but were up 2.5% as compared to July 2002. For July, the confidence level of Canadian distributors rose to 5.7 on a 10-point scale, compared to 5.3 in June and 5.0 in May.

<b>U.S. distributors’ </b>year-to-date sales of PT/MC products increased 0.7% for the first seven months of the year, as compared to sales for January through July in 2002. Sales decreased 3.9% over the previous month and were down 1.6% as compared to July 2002. For July, the confidence level of U.S. distributors fell to 4.9 from 5.0 in June on a 10-point scale.

In July, <b>Canadian manufacturers’ </b>year-to-date sales of PT/MC products grew 2.5% as compared to sales for January through July in 2002. Sales were down 13.0% over the previous month and decreased 3.6% as compared to July 2002. As compared to June sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings decreased.

For July, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers rose to 5.3 from 5.1 in June.

<b>U.S. manufacturers’ </b>year-to-date sales of PT/MC products shrunk 10.9% as compared to sales for January through July in 2002. Sales dropped 11.4% over the previous month and fell 9.3% as compared to July 2002.

As compared to June, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers declined 11.9% as compared to 2002. July orders were down 8.5% over June and dropped 7.7% as compared to July 2002.

For July, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers rose to 5.3 from 5.2 in June.
