Power transmission product sales results mixed in May

Chicago, Ill. –Here is the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) May 2003 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

In May, U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products increased 0.8% as compared to sales for January through May in 2002. Sales decreased 6.0% over the previous month and were down 3.8% as compared to May 2002.

For May, the confidence level of U.S. distributors fell to 4.9, from 5.0 in April, on a 10-point scale.

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products grew 1.7% as compared to sales for January through May in 2002. Sales rose 0.1% over the previous month and were up 0.8% as compared to May 2002.

The confidence level of Canadian distributors fell for May to 5.0 from 5.3 in April on a 10-point scale.

In May, U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products dropped 11.0% as compared to sales for January through May in 2002. Sales declined 0.6% over the previous month and shrunk 14.1% as compared to May 2002.

As compared to April, sales of unmounted bearings, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, and clutches and brakes increased. Sales of mounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products, and shaft couplings decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers were down 12.4% as compared to 2002. May orders fell 2.6% over April and dropped 18.3% as compared to May 2002. Annualized inventory turnover in May was 5.2 turns, compared to 6.2 turns in 2002.

For May, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers remained flat at 5.2 on a 10-point scale.

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products climbed 3.2% as compared to sales for January through May in 2002. Sales increased 2.0% over the previous month but declined 0.1% as compared to May 2002. As compared to April, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of variable speed drives decreased.

For May, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers rose to from 5.0 in April to 5.1 on a 10-point scale.
