July’s PT product sales up compared to year ago

Chicago, IL — Sept. 11, 2002 — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released its July trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

In July, Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products were down 3.0% as compared to sales for January through July in 2001. Sales decreased 6.6% over the previous month but were up 3.5% as compared to July 2001. For July, the confidence level of Canadian distributors fell to 5.5 on a 10-point scale.

U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products declined 3.4% as compared to sales for January through July in 2001. Sales rose 0.3% over the previous month and increased 4.0% as compared to July 2001. For July, the confidence level of U.S. distributors fell to 5.0 on a 10-point scale.

In July, Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 0.2% as compared to sales for January through July in 2001. Sales dropped 6.7% over the previous month but climbed 5.0% as compared to July 2001. As compared to June, sales of mounted bearings, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products decreased. For July, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers fell to 4.9 on a 10-point scale.

U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products decreased 6.4% as compared to sales for January through July in 2001. Sales shrunk 15.5% over the previous month but gained 3.6% as compared to July 2001. As compared to June, sales of positioning systems/linear motion products and gear products increased. Sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors , variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers fell 2.3% as compared to 2001. July orders were down 12.5% over June but grew 1.7% as compared to July 2001. For July, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers rose to 5.1 on a 10-point scale.
