Confidence of Canadian PT distributors is on upswing while trend is opposite in the U.S.

Chicago, IL — July 10, 2002 — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) has released the May 2002 trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Distributor’s results

Canadian distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products declined 4.2% compared to sales for January through May 2001. However, sales were up 2.4% over April 2002 although they had decreased 2.4% compared to May 2001.

For May, the confidence level of Canadian distributors rose to 6.3 on a 10-point scale.

U.S. distributors’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products fell 4.7% as compared to sales for January through May 2001. Sales decreased 1.7% over April 2002 and dropped 2.3% as compared to May 2001.

For May, the confidence level of U.S. distributors fell to 4.8 on a 10-point scale.

Manufacturer’s results

Canadian manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products dropped 0.2% as compared to sales for January through May 2001. Sales rose 2.4% over April 2002 and increased 0.5% compared to May 2001. Compared to April, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings and gear products increased. Sales of variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems and other PT products, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings, decreased.

For May, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers remained flat at 5.1 on a 10-point scale.

U.S. manufacturers’ year-to-date sales of PT/MC products fell 7.8% compared to sales for January through May 2001. Sales decreased 1.7% over the previous month and dropped 3.1% as compared to May 2001. Compared to April, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, clutches and brakes, and shaft couplings increased. Sales of standard industrial motors, positioning systems/linear motion products, gear products, mechanical drive systems and other PT products decreased.

Year-to-date orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers shrunk 4.1% as compared to 2001. May orders dropped 1.9% over April but grew 1.9% as compared to May 2001.

For May, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers fell to 4.9 on a 10-point scale.
