Chicago, Ill. — July 10, 2001 — The Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) today released its most recent trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

In May 2001, Canadian manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products increased 7.2 per cent over the previous month. As compared to April 2001, sales of Mounted Bearings, Unmounted Bearings, Variable Speed Drives, and Mechanical Drive Systems & Other PT increased. Clutches & Brakes and Shaft Couplings decreased. Overall, sales decreased 7.2 per cent as compared to May 2000.

Canadian distributors’ sales of PT/MC products in May 2001 rose to 10.6 per cent over the previous month but decreased 4.5 per cent as compared to May 2000. Days sales in accounts receivables decreased 6.4 per cent over April 2001 and decreased 1.4 per cent as compared to the same month last year. Annualized inventory turnover in May was 5.3 turns as compared to 5.0 in May 2000.

U.S. distributors’ sales of PT/MC products increased 2.8 per cent over the previous month but decreased 2.7 per cent as compared to May 2000. Days sales in accounts receivables decreased 2.2 per cent over May 2001 and increased 0.8 per cent as compared to the same month last year. Annualized inventory turnover in April was 4.1 turns, compared to 5.1 turns in 2000.

Overall, U.S. manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products increased 7.2 per cent over the previous month and decreased 9.8 per cent as compared to April 2000. As compared to April 2001, sales of Mounted Bearings, Unmounted Bearings, Standard Industrial Motors, Gear Products, Mechanical Drive Systems & Other PT, Clutches & Brakes, Shaft Couplings and Positioning Systems/Linear Motion Products (a new category added this month) all increased. Variable Speed Drives decreased over last month.

Total orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers in May 2001 increased 3.2 per cent over April 2001 and decreased 12.4 per cent as compared to last year. Annualized inventory turnover in May was 5.2 turns, compared to 7.5 turns in April 2000.
