Power transmission product suppliers see sales rise in Canada, though confidence wanes

April 5, 2001 — PTDA–the Power Transmission Distributors Association–today released its most recent trend data for distributors and manufacturers of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products.

Canadian distributors’ February 2001 sales of PT/MC products increased 6.6% over the January 2001, and increased 7.5% as compared to February 2000. Days sales in accounts receivables decreased 1.3% over January 2000 and decreased 2.8% as compared to the February last year. Annualized inventory turnover in February was 5.59 turns, compared to 7.4 turns in 2000.

For February, the confidence level of Canadian distributors decreased to 5.5 from 6.0 on a 10-point scale.

U.S. distributors’ February 2001 sales of PT/MC products increased 4.6% over the previous month and decreased 4.5% as compared to February 2000. Days sales in accounts receivables increased 0.4% over January 2000 and decreased 4.0% as compared to the same month last year. Annualized inventory turnover in February was 4.2 turns, compared to 9.3 turns in 2000.

For February, the confidence level of U.S. distributors decreased to 4.3 from 4.5 on a 10-point scale.

MANUFACTURER SALES

Canadian manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products in February 2001 decreased 4.8% over the previous month and decreased 10.6% as compared to February 2000. As compared to January 2001, sales of mounted bearings and gear products increased. Sales of unmounted bearings, variable speed drives, mechanical drive systems & other PT, clutches & brakes and shaft couplings decreased.

For February 2001, the confidence level of Canadian manufacturers decreased to 5.3 from 5.9 on a 10-point scale.

Overall, U.S. manufacturers’ sales of PT/MC products in February 2001 increased 2.0% over the previous month and decreased 5.5% as compared to January 2000. As compared to January 2001, sales of mounted bearings, unmounted bearings, standard industrial motors, variable speed drives, gear products, mechanical drive systems & other PT products and clutches & brakes and shaft couplings increased.

Total February 2001 orders of PT/MC products from U.S. manufacturers increased 2.0% over January 2001 and decreased 5.5% as compared to last year. Annualized inventory turnover in February was 5.1 turns, compared to 10.1 turns in 2000.

For February 2001, the confidence level of U.S. manufacturers decreased to 4.7 from 5.1 on a 10-point scale.
